CyberPatriot

CyberPatriot is the Air & Space Forces Association's National Youth Cyber Defense Competition. Student teams secure virtual computers and networks by finding vulnerabilities, fixing security problems, protecting required services, completing networking challenges, and answering forensics questions.

Why this is part of FamilyPD Cybersecurity Learning: CyberPatriot gives students another structured way to strengthen education and career-ready skills through hands-on practice, teamwork, troubleshooting, documentation, networking, and repeated training. Students can use it alongside courses, labs, certifications, clubs, or independent study—not as a replacement for them.

Ways to participate, learn, or support a team

CyberPatriot is built around middle- and high-school student competitors, but adults can participate as coaches, technical mentors, or team assistants. People who are not yet on a team can still use official CyberPatriot learning resources to understand the competition and strengthen related skills.

MS

Middle school students

Students in middle school or junior-high-level programs can compete through an eligible fielding organization in the Middle School Division. The competition uses the same defensive mindset: inspect systems, identify security problems, make approved fixes, and complete networking work.

HS

High school students

High-school students can compete in the Open Division through eligible schools and youth organizations, or in the All Service Division when they meet the applicable JROTC, Civil Air Patrol, or U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps requirements.

18+

Adults: become a technical mentor

Yes. Adults can serve as CyberPatriot technical mentors. The latest posted rules define mentors as optional technical advisors who help teach cyber-defense skills and ethics during training. Mentors must be adults over 18, cannot be competitors or high-school-level students, must complete CyberPatriot's required background-check process, and must be officially linked to the team. Mentor and team-assistant registration is available year-round.

Adults: coach or support a team

Every team needs one adult coach of record. The coach handles team registration, receives official competition communication, supervises the team, and protects competition integrity. Adults can also register as team assistants to provide nontechnical support. Coaches and mentors train students before a round but may not provide answers or technical assistance during an official competition period.

Mentor vs. coach: A coach owns the official team registration and supervision responsibilities. A technical mentor focuses on helping students learn defensive cybersecurity skills during preparation. A team assistant provides nontechnical support. A team can participate without a technical mentor, but it cannot compete without its required coach and student competitors.

Competition overview

What students actually do

Teams are placed in the role of cybersecurity defenders. During online rounds, they work through one or more virtual operating-system images and Cisco networking activities. The objective is to improve security while keeping the systems and services required by the scenario working.

Important: CyberPatriot is defensive cybersecurity. The official rules emphasize ethical conduct and cyber defense. It is not an offensive hacking competition and does not authorize attacks on real systems.

What a round looks like

Students need both technical skill and disciplined teamwork. A strong team reads first, assigns work, verifies changes, and watches the score without making random fixes.

The posted CyberPatriot 18 rules define teams as 2–6 registered student competitors, with up to five competing at one time. Organizations should confirm the CyberPatriot 19 rules when the CP19 rules book is posted.

Competition time: the current CyberPatriot 19 schedule requires each team to choose one continuous 4-hour block within the official competition window. The schedule lists Thursday–Sunday windows in U.S. Eastern Time.

Training plan

How students should prepare

Do not wait for Round 1. Use the official unscored rounds and build repeatable habits before scores count.

Phase 1 — Foundations

Learn users/groups, strong passwords, permissions, updates, services, firewall basics, malware awareness, Linux commands, IP addressing, subnetting, and Packet Tracer navigation.

Phase 2 — Guided practice

Use Training Round images with answer keys. Require students to explain why each change matters instead of only copying steps.

Phase 3 — Team practice

Run timed practices. Assign focus areas, maintain a change log, watch score changes, and rotate students so everyone develops more than one skill.

Phase 4 — Competition rehearsal

Use the Practice Round to test computers, network access, VMware, Cisco NetAcad, image downloads, passwords, and the full 4-hour workflow.

Recommended student roles during practice
  • Windows lead: focuses on Windows/Server hardening and documents changes.
  • Linux lead: focuses on Linux users, permissions, packages, services, logs, and firewall.
  • Networking lead: manages Cisco content and Packet Tracer tasks.
  • Forensics/research lead: tracks questions, evidence, documentation, and permissible research.
  • Coordinator/change logger: monitors time, score, dependencies, and team communication.
Roles are a training strategy, not official CyberPatriot roles. Rotate responsibilities so students develop broader skills.
What students should record in a change log
Record the time, system/image, change made, reason for the change, who made it, score change/result, and whether the change was reversed. A log helps prevent duplicate work and makes post-round review more useful.

Before registering students

Technical requirements organizations should check

CyberPatriot keeps requirements relatively modest, but virtualization and network filtering can become major problems if they are not tested early.

Common issueSchool/organization firewalls, filters, and proxies can block competition traffic. Run the official connection test before scored rounds.
Competition integrity

Rules students need to understand before competing

Training is the time for coaching. During an official round, competitors are responsible for their own team's work and must follow CyberPatriot's resource and assistance rules.

No outside assistance during the round

Coaches, mentors, team assistants, other teams, and non-team members cannot give competitors answers, suggestions, or hands-on help during the official competition period.

Use only permitted resources

CyberPatriot rules allow specified internet, printed, electronic, and software resources under defined conditions. Students must know the current rules before competition.

Do not share competition material

Teams may not share active competition vulnerabilities, screenshots, answers, documents, or other restricted round information with other teams or online.

Do not perform offensive activity

The competition is defensive. Attempts to attack competition infrastructure, perform unauthorized entry, or manipulate the scoring environment can lead to penalties or disqualification.

Season-rule note: As of August 22, 2026, CyberPatriot's Rules Book page still links the CyberPatriot 18 (2025–26) Rules Book while CyberPatriot 19 registration and schedules are active. Use the latest posted rules for preparation, but re-check the official Rules Book page before every scored CP19 round so any new CP19 rules take priority.

CyberPatriot 19 registration + cost

Organizations should budget early, but fee waivers make participation more accessible for several team types.

How an organization can implement CyberPatriot

This model is intentionally organization-neutral so it can be used by any eligible program. Always check CyberPatriot eligibility and current rules for your organization type.

Confirm eligibility + division.
Determine whether the team belongs in Open High School, All Service, or Middle School Division and identify the fielding organization.
Select an adult coach.
The coach creates the team, manages registration, receives official communications, supervises competition, and protects competition integrity.
Recruit a balanced team.
Look for students interested in Windows, Linux, networking, troubleshooting, investigation, and teamwork—not only students who already consider themselves “cyber experts.”
Register on time.
Create CP19 teams by Oct. 1, add competitors by Oct. 21, and pay/request waivers by the published payment deadline.
Validate technology early.
Check 64-bit systems, RAM/storage, virtualization, VMware, Packet Tracer, required websites, port access, downloads, and the CyberPatriot connection test.
Use a weekly training system.
Teach one skill block, practice it, document it, then use official images to apply the skill. Rotate student responsibilities.
Use official unscored rounds.
Exhibition, Training, and Practice rounds let teams learn the real workflow before scored rounds.
Debrief every practice and round.
Review what the team fixed, missed, broke, researched, and learned. Turn the results into the next training plan.
Suggested weekly practice structure
60–90 minutes: 10-minute goal/briefing → 20-minute skill lesson → 30–45-minute hands-on practice → 10-minute team debrief/change-log review. Increase to longer timed simulations as competition approaches.
Suggested evidence of student growth
Keep student-safe records such as skill checklists, change logs from practice images, networking exercises, team reflection notes, screenshots from approved training work, attendance, practice scores, and individual reflections. Do not publicly post restricted competition materials.
Safety + supervision
Follow the organization's youth-protection, technology-use, privacy, and facility rules. The latest posted CyberPatriot rules emphasize competitor safety, coach supervision, fair competition, and protection of competition materials.
